Toyotomi Kyodai! drama explores Oda and Toyotomi power struggles

The NHK Taiga drama ‘Toyotomi Kyodai!’ continues to captivate audiences as it depicts the power struggles following the death of Oda Nobunaga. In recent episodes, the narrative focuses on the growing tension between Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oichi, Nobunaga’s sister. Having married Shibata Katsuie to secure power against Hideyoshi’s ambitions, Oichi has emerged as a formidable political opponent, even issuing a de facto declaration of war to Hideyoshi’s brother, Hideyasu.

Parallel to the drama’s portrayal of the Toyotomi rise, historical analysis highlights the often-overlooked capabilities of Oda Nobutada, Nobunaga’s heir. While frequently overshadowed by Hideyoshi’s later achievements, Nobutada demonstrated significant military prowess, notably leading the successful 10-day siege of Shigaigisan Castle against Matsunaga Hisahide. Historians suggest that had he survived the Honno-ji Incident, Nobutada was well-positioned to be a major leader in the unification of Japan.
