DHS terminates TPS for Venezuela and 12 other nations
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for citizens of Venezuela and 12 other nations, including Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, South Sudan, Burma, and Somalia. The DHS stated that the emergencies that originally justified these designations have subsided.
Beneficiaries are being urged to leave the United States immediately or face deportation. To facilitate voluntary departures, the DHS is offering a program through the CBP Home mobile app that includes free travel, a waiver of fines for illegal presence, and a $2,600 departure bonus.
Following these terminations, only four countries—El Salvador, Ukraine, Sudan, and Lebanon—currently maintain TPS protections. In Honduras, officials have expressed difficulty in reversing the decision, while experts noted a lack of successful diplomatic negotiation to extend the benefits. Meanwhile, legal experts warn that new rulings on 'advance parole' could expose long-term residents to significant re-entry penalties if they travel abroad.
