Rize and Trabzon hit by severe rainfall and landslides
Severe rainfall and subsequent landslides have caused significant disruption across Turkey’s Black Sea region, particularly in the provinces of Rize and Trabzon. In Rize, Governor İhsan Selim Baydaş described the event as the province’s largest disaster of the year. Heavy precipitation, with some areas recording up to 186 kg per square meter, triggered landslides and flooding. In the Pazar district, a landslide struck a two-story home, trapping a family of six who were eventually rescued through a window. In the Derepazarı district, approximately 50 landslides were reported, affecting eight neighborhoods and forcing the evacuation of several homes.
In Trabzon, rainfall reached approximately 50 kg per square meter in various locations, leading to flooding on streets and in businesses. Emergency response efforts are underway, with over 500 personnel and hundreds of vehicles deployed by agencies including AFAD, the General Directorate of Highways, and local municipalities. While infrastructure damage, road closures, and electricity outages have been reported, no fatalities have been confirmed in the affected areas so far. Authorities have issued warnings for continued heavy rain and potential further flooding or landslides in the region.
