Trabzon ice cream receives official geographical indication status

Trabzon ice cream has officially received a geographical indication registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office. The product, which has roots dating back to the 1800s, is characterized by an eight-hour cooking process using fatty cow's milk, salep, and minimal sugar.

Following an application by the Trabzon Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TTSO), the registration aims to protect local production and increase the city's brand value in the gastronomy sector. The ice cream is made using high-quality milk from the Hamsiköy highlands, which is influenced by the local flora.

TTSO President Erkut Çelebi stated that the goal is to first popularize the product within Turkey and subsequently expand into international markets, including Europe. This registration marks the 10th food-related geographical indication for Trabzon, bringing the city's total number of registered products to 16.
