Trabzonspor and Drogheda United host friendship match and documentary project

Trabzonspor and the Irish club Drogheda United recently met for a friendship match at Papara Park on October 1, 2026. Drogheda United won the match 1-0, but the event focused heavily on the long-standing bond between the two clubs.

Following the visit, Drogheda United issued a thank-you message to Trabzon in both Turkish and English on social media, expressing a desire to return.

The encounter is also part of an independent documentary project titled ‘An Gorta Mór – The Star & The Crescent’. The film explores the historical ties between Ireland and Turkey, specifically highlighting the humanitarian aid provided by the Ottoman Empire during the Great Famine. The documentary plans to use footage from the match and is intended for broadcast on Turkish television.
