Tractor Supply Co. announces closure of 75 Petsense locations
Tractor Supply Co., the United States’ largest rural‑lifestyle retailer, said it will shut down about 75 underperforming Petsense stores, roughly one‑third of the chain’s 209 locations in 23 states. The retailer, which bought Petsense for $145 million in 2016, expects the closures to generate approximately $71.7 million in impairment and other charges, including a $5.9 million inventory write‑down. CEO Hal Lawton said the moves will improve returns, simplify the business and free capital for higher‑growth opportunities.
Despite the cuts, Tractor Supply plans to open between 85 and 90 new stores in 2027, down from an earlier target of 100, and will redirect investment to initiatives such as store remodels and final‑mile delivery.
Customers of the affected Petsense stores have expressed disappointment on social media, describing the closures as a loss of valuable community pet‑care services.
