Tractor Supply Co. reports weak Q2 earnings amid fuel, drought

Tractor Supply Co. said its second‑quarter results fell short of expectations, pulling its long‑term financial forecast and scaling back growth initiatives. The company attributed the dip to higher fuel prices that discouraged discretionary spending during the peak spring selling season and persistent drought conditions in key southeastern markets that reduced demand for lawn‑care and outdoor products. Comp sales were lowered by roughly two percentage points in May, and the retailer noted a shift by customers toward needs‑based items while discretionary purchases lagged.

Despite the weak quarter, the firm highlighted its full‑year performance, reporting FY 2023 revenue of about $14.6 billion and maintaining a mid‑single‑digit operating margin. It continued its disciplined capital return program with multiple dividend hikes since 2021 and share repurchases in the high‑three‑digit‑million‑dollar range. The strategy remains focused on expanding its store network in rural U.S. towns, strengthening loyalty programs and growing its e‑commerce share, aiming to sustain profitability in a challenging consumer environment.
