Tractor-trailer strikes New York overpass and overturns on I-87

A tractor-trailer struck the South Broadway overpass on the I-87 highway in South Nyack, New York, on Monday afternoon around 12:20 p.m. Dashcam footage shows the vehicle hitting the bottom of the bridge at high speed before tipping onto its side and sliding across the roadway, scattering debris and blocking multiple lanes of traffic.

Despite the severity of the collision, the 50-year-old driver, Pernell Harris, was unhurt. However, an individual in a Toyota sedan parked in the breakdown lane near the bridge was evacuated and transported to a hospital; their condition was expected to be stable.

Authorities determined the vehicle was exceeding the permitted height for the overpass. Harris was issued a ticket for driving an over-height vehicle. Investigators noted that this specific bridge has a history of similar incidents, including a comparable accident in 2023.
