Trade unions demand decent work and job security for youth

On the 2026 World Day for Decent Work, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and ITUC-Africa have called for urgent action to address youth unemployment and secure labor rights. The global theme, “Young Workers Organising for the Future,” highlights the struggles of young people facing insecure contracts, low wages, and an affordability crisis.

In Africa, ITUC-Africa Secretary-General Joel Odigie urged leaders and the African Union to prioritize decent job creation within economic policies and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He emphasized the need for living wages, universal social protection, and the protection of migrant workers to reduce vulnerability to exploitation and irregular migration.

Global data from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) indicates that youth unemployment reached 12.4% in 2025. In Nigeria, the National Bureau of Statistics reports youth unemployment and underemployment at over 40%, driven by precarious gig work and the rising cost of living. Local organizations, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, marked the day by hosting discussions on building collective power for young workers.
