Trade war with U.S. impacts Canadian jobs and industry

The escalating trade war between the United States and Canada is causing economic strain, particularly in regional sectors. In the Côte-Nord region, Bloc Québécois MP Marilène Gill reported that the forestry industry has already seen job losses due to trade tensions. Gill expressed concern that further escalations could impact other vital sectors, such as fisheries, and has called for increased government assistance for affected businesses and workers.

On a national level, the labor union Unifor is urging the Canadian government to utilize all available economic levers to defend domestic jobs and industrial sovereignty. Unifor president Lana Payne characterized the Trump administration’s economic actions as a broader attempt to weaken Canada’s industrial base. The union is advocating for the use of the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act to prevent Canadian companies from moving production to the United States in response to trade pressures, while also calling for reforms to employment insurance.
