Trademark disputes arise over 'Libres y Lokos' and 'Pirlo Sport' brands

Two separate legal disputes regarding trademark registrations have emerged in the sports sector.

In Mexico, sports journalist Willie González has filed a formal application with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) to register 'Libres y Lokos', the name of the Tigres UANL supporters' group. The move has faced backlash from fans and group leaders, such as Samuel Reyes, who argue the name is a collective community identity rather than private property. The previous registration for the name expired in 2023, making it available for new applications. The IMPI is currently analyzing the case.

In Colombia, UEFA has filed an opposition against the registration of the 'Pirlo Sport' brand before the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce. The application sought to cover various goods and services, including footwear components and advertising. UEFA argued that the brand's visual elements, specifically a star-patterned ball, are substantially similar to the UEFA Champions League logo, which could mislead consumers regarding the brand's origin.
