TradeWaltz platform to pilot stablecoin-based trade settlements

Six companies, including TradeWaltz, NTT Data, Mizuho Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking, are collaborating on a proof-of-concept experiment for trade settlements using the TradeWaltz platform. The project has been selected for support by the Financial Services Agency’s Payment Innovation Project (PIP).

The experiment aims to verify the use of stablecoins in trade-related fund settlements to reduce the time and costs associated with traditional paper-based processes, such as Letters of Credit (L/C) and Bills of Lading (B/L). By linking the TradeWaltz digital platform with a stablecoin infrastructure, the participants intend to test technical and legal aspects of executing payments triggered by the approval of export receivables.

If successful and expanded to include importers, the initiative could significantly shorten lead times for exporters to receive funds and reduce the administrative burden on banks through automated data linkage and streamlined settlement processes.
