Traditional and practical methods for maintaining indoor warmth
Effective ways to maintain indoor warmth during cold weather involve both simple household adjustments and traditional heating methods. To maximize heat retention, it is recommended to keep curtains open during sunny days to allow sunlight to warm walls, floors, and furniture, which then release heat gradually. Curtains should be closed immediately after sunset to create an additional thermal barrier against cold windows.
In regions with extreme temperatures, such as Harbin, China, traditional systems like the 'kang' platform bed have been used. This method directs warm air and smoke through channels beneath a thick clay bed, allowing the clay to absorb and slowly release heat throughout the night. Similar regional techniques include the Korean 'ondol' floor heating system and the Japanese 'kotatsu' heated table. Other supplementary measures include using thick rugs to insulate floors and ensuring radiators are not obstructed by furniture or heavy drapes to allow proper air circulation.
