Traditional artisans preserve heritage crafts in Turkey

In Turkey, individuals are working to preserve traditional crafts through lifelong dedication and new entrepreneurial ventures.

In Aksaray, 82-year-old Memiş Ergin has spent 70 years practicing shoe repair. Having started as a young boy polishing shoes, Ergin transitioned from an apprentice to a master craftsman. Despite the advancement of modern technology, he continues to operate his workshop using traditional tools such as an anvil, hammer, and needle.

In Kastamonu, 58-year-old Ergül Küçüksipahioğlu has turned a traditional weaving practice into a successful small business. Inspired by her grandmothers' history of weaving to support family budgets, she converted a room in her home into a workshop after receiving training at a public education center. Operating under the name ‘Mini Dokuma Atölyesi’, she produces handmade items including towels, runners, and bags, reporting high demand for her products.
