Traditional Chinese exercises provide relief for musculoskeletal pain

A comprehensive review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has confirmed that traditional Chinese exercises, including Tai Chi, Qigong, Baduanjin, Yijinjing, Wuqinxi, and Daoyin, provide multidimensional benefits for individuals with musculoskeletal disorders.

Analyzing 92 academic papers and 1,744 clinical trials, researchers found high-certainty evidence that these practices improve physical function, mental health, sleep quality, and bone mineral density. Specifically, Tai Chi was noted for significantly alleviating chronic pain and stiffness. The exercises also showed effectiveness in improving movement for those with knee osteoarthritis and enhancing sleep for patients with fibromyalgia.

To achieve maximum benefits, the study suggests participants engage in these exercises at least three times a week for longer than six months, totaling at least 15 minutes per session. These findings are particularly relevant given that musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability globally, affecting over 1.7 billion people.
