2,500‑Year‑Old Marble Statue Unearthed at Sardes, Manisa

Archaeologists working under the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism uncovered a 2.2‑metre marble statue of a young man at the ancient city of Sardes in the Salihli district of Manisa Province. The figure dates to the early 5th century BCE, making it roughly 2,500 years old. It was found face‑down, having been reused as a spolia stone in a Roman‑period columned street, which helped preserve its fine details, including Lydian‑style clothing and a fruit held in the hand.

Culture Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the discovery on social media, calling it “an unique find that will shed light on Anatolian archaeology.” Ongoing scientific examination will assess possible ancient paint residues, and the statue is slated for display in the Manisa Museum after conservation work.
