Traditional Dance Festivals Revive Greek Heritage in Vellas and Messini

On 1 August, the Holy Monastery of Vellas hosted the "Pistrofia 2026 – In Traditional Roads" music and dance event. Hundreds of citizens gathered as the municipality of Pogoni and the Metropolis of Ioannina turned the historic monastery courtyard into a lively folk‑culture hub. The program featured clarinet virtuoso Giorgos Kotsinis, vocalists, and traditional ensembles representing Epirus, Thrace, Crete, and other regions, accompanied by folk‑dance groups from the Hellenic Center for Folklore Studies.

Later in August, the 26th Festival of Traditional Dances took place in the open‑air theatre of Messini. Organized by the municipality of Messini together with local cultural associations, the two‑day festival showcased traditional music and dances from Messini, Ikaria, and Komotini. Mayor Georgios Athanasopoulos welcomed participants and highlighted the event’s role in preserving Greece’s cultural identity, while the municipal council covered all costs.

Both festivals underscore local authorities’ commitment to safeguarding and promoting Greece’s intangible cultural heritage through community‑driven performances and inter‑regional collaborations.
