Traditional oil wrestling events held in Beyağaç and Elmalı

Traditional oil wrestling (yağlı güreş) events continue to be a significant cultural fixture in Turkey, with major local municipalities organizing and supporting these historic competitions.

In Beyağaç, the 15th Traditional Hüseyin Çokal Oil Wrestling matches are scheduled for October 4. Organized through a partnership between Denizli Metropolitan Municipality and Beyağaç Municipality, the event aims to establish the region as a key wrestling center in the Aegean. Following last year's participation of over 700 wrestlers, officials expect even higher attendance this year.

In Antalya, the 674th Historical Elmalı Oil Wrestling matches recently took place. Supported by a cooperation protocol between Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and Elmalı Municipality, the event is recognized as one of Turkey's oldest sporting traditions, often referred to as 'the first wrestling arena of the Turks.' Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Büşra Özdemir attended the event to support the athletes and emphasize the importance of preserving this cultural heritage.
