Traditional Spanish businesses face decline due to generational shifts
Traditional small businesses and neighborhood shops are facing a significant decline across Spain, moving from rural areas into major cities like Madrid and Barcelona. The organization of self-employed workers, UPTA, estimates that nearly half of these classic establishments could disappear within the next decade due to a lack of generational replacement.
Several factors contribute to this trend, including high rents, inflation, and intense competition from large supermarkets. Younger generations are often deterred by demanding service hours and the nature of customer interaction. This shift is noted to impact the social fabric of communities, as these shops historically served as vital meeting points for residents, particularly the elderly who rely on proximity and personal trust.
