Traditional Spanish shoe stores close after decades of service

Long-standing family-run shoe businesses in Spain are reaching the end of their operations, marking the decline of traditional local commerce.

In Alba de Tormes, Calzados La Rueda is closing its doors on October 31 after 80 years of activity. The business, led by sisters María Teresa and Marisa Hernández, was inherited from their parents. The shop survived significant challenges, including a total loss of its original facilities due to a fire. María Teresa, who has worked in commerce for 57 years, and Marisa, with 44 years of service, represent a generation of retailers deeply connected to their local communities.

Similarly, in Seville, the shoe store Los Columpios, operated by Fátima and María José Pérez Cano, represents a vanishing breed of merchants in historic centers increasingly dominated by franchises. The shop is noted for its personalized service and deep connection to the local community's childhood memories.
