Traditional Summer Festivals in Croatia and Slovenia Attract Locals and Tourists

On Saturday, August 8, the historic centre of Vrsi in Croatia will host the annual Vrške ćakule, a night of traditional games, folk music and a wide range of homemade dishes. Organiser Šime Stojak said the event draws thousands of visitors from across the country and abroad, offering rope‑pulling, water‑on‑the‑head challenges, egg‑spoon races and other contests for all ages, alongside local specialties such as fried dough, lasagna and homemade chocolate.

Meanwhile, the town of Bovec in Slovenia will hold the traditional Čomparska noč on Saturday, featuring dance and music performances, a competition in preparing fried potatoes (čompe), and an extended programme that runs until the early hours. Tourism society president Tatjana Komac highlighted the strong local turnout last year and the decision to lengthen the event this time, aiming to showcase the region’s culinary heritage and foster community spirit.

Both festivals serve as cultural showcases that preserve local customs, promote regional cuisine and boost tourism in their respective areas.
