Traditional wooden cooper's hammer displayed in Bad Sachsa museum

The Wintersport- und Heimatmuseum Bad Sachsa features a massive wooden hammer, also known as a Böttcherhammer or Klüpfel, used in the traditional cooperage and barrel-making trade.

The tool consists of a cylindrical, slightly barrel-shaped head made of dense, hard wood, with a turned or carved wooden handle fitted through the center. In cooperage, these hammers were used alongside specialized irons to drive wooden or iron hoops onto assembled staves without damaging the material. The artifact shows significant signs of use, including notches, bruising, and a distinct patina from intensive manual labor.
