Traefik and Nginx comparison for reverse proxy use cases
Traefik and Nginx offer different approaches to reverse proxying and load balancing. Traefik is a cloud-native solution designed to automatically discover services from orchestrators like Docker, Kubernetes, and Consul. It manages routes dynamically without requiring service restarts and includes built-in support for Let's Encrypt HTTPS certificates. It is particularly suited for microservices environments where service configurations change frequently.
In contrast, Nginx serves as a broader web server tool capable of serving static files, caching content, and proxying mail or TCP traffic. While Nginx requires manual configuration of routes, it provides a wider range of features for traditional web serving and content management.
For Kubernetes users, Traefik v2 introduces the use of Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs) to manage IngressRoutes, Middlewares, and TCP/TLS options, moving away from the standard Ingress resources used in previous versions.
