Latin America faces rising transport violence and traffic fatalities

Latin America is facing significant challenges regarding road safety and transportation security. In Honduras, the National Directorate of Roads and Transport (DNVT) reported that 2026 has seen over 13,000 traffic accidents and more than 1,500 fatalities. Additionally, authorities have issued over 350,000 sanctions, including 16,000 for driving under the influence.

In Guatemala, the transport sector is struggling with a crisis of violence. The Gretexpa union estimates a 25% loss in labor capacity, with 2,000 to 3,000 drivers leaving the industry due to extortion and threats. The union also noted that 35 drivers were killed in 2026 due to criminal activity.

In Peru, a bus driver was murdered in Villa El Salvador, highlighting a trend where 107 attacks on public transport workers were recorded in Lima and Callao during the first half of the year.

Fatal accidents also continue to impact the region, such as a major multi-vehicle collision in the Los Chorros section of the Pan-American Highway, which resulted in at least five deaths and 27 injuries after a sand truck lost control.
