Traffic congestion and road deterioration reported in Niterói region
Commuters in the Niterói metropolitan area are facing significant travel difficulties due to heavy traffic congestion and poor road conditions. On Tuesday morning, heavy traffic blocked access points to the Rio-Niterói Bridge, causing delays within Niterói on Avenida Marquês do Paraná and in the Icaraí neighborhood. While the bridge crossing itself was estimated at 22 minutes toward Rio de Janeiro, total travel times were significantly higher due to urban congestion before reaching the bridge.
Additionally, motorists have reported severe infrastructure issues on the RJ-104 (Rodovia Amaral Peixoto), a 25-kilometer stretch connecting Niterói, São Gonçalo, and Itaboraí. Drivers reported frequent accidents, safety concerns, and numerous potholes that have caused vehicle damage, including broken tires and shock absorbers. Public transportation users also noted the impact of the road conditions on bus services. The State Department of Highways (DER-RJ) stated that repairs to the RJ-104 pavement are being carried out.
