Mexico and Ecuador launch school mobility programs

As the new school year begins, several cities in Mexico and Ecuador have implemented specialized mobility programs to assist students and reduce traffic congestion.

In Mexico City, the Red de Transporte de Pasajeros (RTP) is operating the ‘Camino Seguro: Jóvenes Seguros’ program, providing direct routes from Metro stations to various universities, including UNAM, IPN, and UAM, with preferential rates for students. In Querétaro, the state has launched a free school transport program benefiting over 10,000 students across 886 communities, while the municipality of Querétaro operates 43 specific routes for primary and secondary students. Additionally, the municipality of Colón has deployed 15 units to serve 53 communities. Authorities in Querétaro also reported the closure of 12 irregular schools.

In Quito, Ecuador, the municipal government has introduced special ‘school express’ services on the Trolebús and Ecovía corridors, offering direct routes and a reduced fare of $0.17 for students. To manage increased traffic, Mayor Pabel Muñoz announced that municipal workers will start their shifts one hour later. A large-scale security and mobility operation involving over 3,000 officers has been deployed to manage transit and public spaces near educational institutions.
