Traffic fines in Austria, Switzerland, and Italy

Drivers facing traffic violations abroad should be aware of cross-border enforcement mechanisms within Europe. In the EU, fines exceeding 70 euros can be collected in Germany. For Austria, the threshold for enforcement is lower, at 25 euros. Since May 2024, fines from Switzerland can also be enforced in Germany for amounts over 70 euros or 80 Swiss francs, with the Federal Office of Justice in Bonn overseeing the process.

To assist travelers, the ADAC has expanded its fine calculator to include Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. The tool allows users to estimate potential sanctions for various offenses, such as speeding or illegal parking, by accounting for country-specific laws and legal peculiarities.

When receiving a foreign fine notice, it is advised to verify the authenticity of the document by checking the license plate, date, location, and the issuing authority or authorized collection agency. Ignoring such notices is discouraged, as unpaid debts may impact future travel to the country where the violation occurred.
