Traffic jams choke Croatia, Slovenia and Austria after holiday weekend

Heavy traffic returned to Central Europe after the extended weekend, with Croatia experiencing congestion on its main motorways A1 (Zagreb–Ploče), A6 (Rijeka–Zagreb) and A2 (Zagreb–Macelj). Drivers faced queues up to one kilometre long at several border points, including a three‑hour wait at the Gradiška crossing and two‑hour delays at Orašje and Maljevac. Additional slowdowns were reported on routes through Lika, Gorski kotar and near the Krk bridge.

In Slovenia, the Karavanke tunnel towards Austria saw a multi‑kilometre backup, with a 4.5 km queue forming as the tunnel was intermittently closed. Shorter hold‑ups were also noted on other sections of the Slovenian highway network. The combined effect of holiday travel and favorable weather has led to prolonged travel times across the region.
