Traffic monitoring and speed enforcement updates in Brazil and Portugal

In Joaçaba, Brazil, an electronic radar has been installed at the Adolfo Zigueli access point to collect traffic data. Utilizing Doppler technology, the device monitors vehicle speed, volume, and categories, with a specific focus on heavy vehicles. This installation is currently in a data collection phase and is not being used to issue fines. The gathered information will help authorities decide whether to maintain or change the current 40 km/h speed limit and may inform future regulations for heavy cargo vehicles to protect road pavement and improve safety on sharp curves.

In the Algarve region of Portugal, fixed speed radars are actively monitoring traffic on several major roads, including the A2 and the EN125. According to the ANSR, these control points include locations in Paderne, Lagoa, Guia, Ferreiras, Faro, and Montenegro. Unlike the data-gathering efforts in Brazil, these Portuguese systems are used for active enforcement, where speeding violations can result in significant fines, driver inhibition, and the loss of license points.
