Traffic Noise Linked to Higher Risk of Depression, Anxiety and Parkinson Disease
Recent scientific studies have found that chronic exposure to road and rail traffic noise can act as a continuous biological stressor, increasing the likelihood of several health problems. A longitudinal study led by the University of Oulu in Finland followed 114,353 young residents of the Helsinki metropolitan area for up to ten years and showed that noise levels exceeding the World Health Organization’s recommended limit of 53 dB significantly raise the probability of developing depression, anxiety, elevated cholesterol and even a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. The risk was especially pronounced for men and for individuals whose parents had no prior history of mental‑health disorders. The research suggests that keeping ambient noise between 45 and 50 dB can mitigate these health effects, while noise above 53–55 dB triggers a sharp increase in risk.
These findings add to a growing body of evidence published in journals such as Environmental Research and JAMA Neurology, highlighting traffic noise as more than a mere inconvenience and emphasizing the need for stricter urban noise regulations to protect public health.
