Central European nations update traffic safety regulations

Several Central European countries are implementing or considering new traffic safety measures and regulations.

In Hungary, the government has launched a public survey to gather opinions on stricter penalties. Proposed measures include imprisonment for illegal street racing, temporary vehicle impoundment for extreme speeding, and new age limits or helmet requirements for e-scooters. This follows a fatal accident in Siófok involving a speeding vehicle.

In Romania, drivers face penalties for driving significantly below the minimum speed limit on designated roads, such as highways. Additionally, in Satu Mare, authorities have installed signs and markings to remind e-scooter users that riding on sidewalks is prohibited.

Slovakia is set to introduce new camera-based enforcement starting September 1. The system will use artificial intelligence to monitor safe following distances, mobile phone usage, and seatbelt compliance.
