Trafikverket proposes earlier construction for Lilla Edet locks
Trafikverket has proposed an accelerated construction timeline for several major infrastructure projects in Sweden, specifically targeting the 2027–2029 period. A key part of this proposal involves the new locks in Lilla Edet as part of the Trollhätte canal project.
Due to the deteriorating condition of the existing lock system, there is an increasing risk of disruptions to maritime traffic. Lilla Edet has been identified as the area with the highest probability of functional failure. By initiating construction earlier, authorities aim to secure the future of shipping on Lake Vänern, enhance industrial competitiveness, and allow for larger vessels to transport more goods, thereby reducing the load on road and rail networks.
