Tragedies involving children in Italy prompt investigation and legal debate
In San Giuseppe di Cassola, a three-year-old boy named Leonardo Zanetti died after reportedly suffocating. His mother, Milena Dal Molin, discovered he was not breathing and attempted life-saving measures guided by emergency operators while waiting for an ambulance. Despite the arrival of medical personnel and an air ambulance from Treviso, the child could not be revived. Carabinieri are investigating the circumstances, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the respiratory crisis.
In a separate legal development in Imola, a judge has suspended a manslaughter trial related to the July 2024 drowning of five-year-old Arkea Pepa at the Molino Rosso hotel pool. The case, which involves the child's mother and a lifeguard, has been referred to the Constitutional Court. The judge is seeking a ruling on the concept of ‘natural punishment,’ questioning whether the exceptional suffering endured by a parent should influence the application of the ‘tenuità del fatto’ (minimal offensiveness) clause in the penal code when a death has occurred.
