British mother dies in Bahamas while rescuing sons from current
Leanne Gregory, a 36-year-old British woman from Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, during a snorkeling excursion near Bimini in the Bahamas. The tragedy occurred when a powerful sea current swept away her two sons while the family was snorkeling near the southern point of the island.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Gregory entered the water in an attempt to rescue her children. She was also swept away by the current. While the two boys were successfully rescued from the water, Gregory was found unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. Despite attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation by her husband, Nathan Gregory, and local responders, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local clinic.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the sudden death, though preliminary reports indicate that foul play is not suspected. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has expressed condolences and confirmed it is providing support to the family while coordinating with local Bahamian authorities.
