TRAI investigates Vodafone Idea over alleged customer poaching

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is investigating allegations of unfair competition and mobile number portability (MNP) malpractices by Vodafone Idea. The probe follows formal representations from Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, who claim Vodafone Idea is using improper tactics to poach customers.

The competitors allege that Vodafone Idea has been promoting tariff benefits specifically tied to customers porting their connections to its network. Such preferential or differential tariff benefits offered exclusively to porting customers are considered impermissible under TRAI regulations. Additionally, there are claims that agents or employees have contacted customers using the names of rival companies to falsely report fee increases or plan changes to induce switching.

TRAI Chairman AK Lahoti confirmed that the regulator will examine the concerns. Reports indicate that TRAI has requested Vodafone Idea to conduct an internal investigation into the matter and submit its findings. A spokesperson for Vodafone Idea stated that the company believes in fair competition and maintains that all business operations are conducted in compliance with existing laws.
