Traian Băsescu discusses potential PSD-AUR tandem and early elections
Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has suggested that a political tandem between the PSD and AUR parties could eventually come to power due to their shared electorate and mistakes made by other political actors. This assessment follows polling data indicating AUR at 39.7%, followed by PSD at 18.7% and PNL at 17.8%.
Băsescu also addressed the possibility of early elections, describing the scenario as “feasible” and a constitutional option to rectify the “catastrophic elections of 2024.” He noted that the country has been under an interim government for over four months following the dismissal of Ilie Bolojan’s government via a motion of censure in May.
Other political leaders, including PSD President Sorin Grindeanu and USR's Dominic Fritz, have also indicated that early elections may be unavoidable to resolve the ongoing political deadlock. Băsescu criticized President Nicușor Dan for prolonging the crisis by refusing to designate a prime ministerial candidate without prior guarantees of parliamentary support.
