Traian Băsescu warns of rising fuel prices amid oil market volatility

Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has warned of imminent fuel price increases driven by Middle Eastern supply tensions. He cautioned that current prices are relatively low compared to what is expected in the coming months.

Băsescu noted that if the Saudi East-West pipeline, which transports oil to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, is not restored following recent attacks, crude oil prices could exceed 120 dollars per barrel. Brent crude futures recently closed at 104.87 dollars per barrel.

To mitigate potential energy shocks, Băsescu urged the Romanian government to reduce public spending. He also identified Kazakh oil as a strategic opportunity for Romanian refineries, provided that the Novorossiysk terminal remains operational despite regional conflicts.
