Trail City Council investigates abandoned downtown property

The Trail City Council has passed a motion directing staff to investigate an abandoned service station site located at 705 Victoria St. The lot has remained vacant for over a decade, prompting concerns from local officials regarding its impact on the downtown area.

Councillor Nick Cashol raised the motion following a resident request, noting that the site may contain underground storage tanks and petroleum contamination. Such issues could lead to significant environmental liability and remediation costs. Additionally, officials expressed concern that the unsightly premises could negatively affect surrounding property values, local investment, and economic development.

Councillor Thea Hanson noted the difficulty of dealing with large corporate owners who may lack interest in the property. Chief Administrative Officer Colin McClure indicated that while the city explores options, addressing such vacant sites is a challenge faced by many municipalities.
