Ferromex train derailment in Jalisco kills two National Guard officers

A Ferromex freight train derailment in the Tonila municipality of Jalisco, Mexico, resulted in the deaths of two National Guard officers and left three others injured. The accident occurred late Friday, October 2, or early Saturday, October 3, near the community of Tenexcamilpa on the route between Manzanillo and Tlaquepaque.

The convoy consisted of 122 wagons carrying various goods. Fifteen National Guard members from the Colima State Coordination were on board providing security for the shipment. The derailment involved the second front locomotive, which reportedly overturned and, in some reports, caught fire. The two fatalities include one man and one woman, while the three injured consist of one woman in regular condition and two men with minor injuries.

Emergency response efforts were significantly hindered by the mountainous terrain and difficult access in the Tonila-Atenquique section. Rescuers had to utilize Ferromex rail vehicles to reach the site. Authorities have confirmed that no hazardous materials were being transported in the containers. The Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, which preliminary reports suggest may have been caused by damaged tracks.
