Train safety: Recommended seating positions during accidents

Experts suggest that certain seating positions may help reduce injury risks during railway accidents, although no single location guarantees absolute safety. Factors such as collision speed, impact direction, and structural damage to the train significantly influence passenger outcomes.

Middle carriages are often recommended because they may remain more protected during head-on or rear-end collisions, where end cars typically sustain the most damage. For instance, during the 2008 Chatsworth accident in California, the first passenger car suffered severe damage, resulting in many casualties.

Other safety considerations include sitting near the aisle to minimize exposure to shattering window glass and choosing seats facing the opposite direction of travel to limit forward body movement during impact. Modern train designs also incorporate energy-absorbing structures to protect passengers. Regardless of seating, passengers are advised to follow crew instructions and keep aisles and emergency exits clear.
