Trainer Les Bridge targets strong Rosehill run for colt Columbus

Veteran Randwick trainer Les Bridge says the time is right to test his well‑bred colt Columbus at Rosehill. The $1.5 million yearling, a son of Dundeel out of Fastnet Rock mare Tides, will contest the 1500‑metre Benchmark 72 handicap for three‑ and four‑year‑olds after a three‑start spring campaign and a first‑up win at Newcastle on 14 July.

Columbus entered the race as the $2.20 TAB favourite with jockey James McDonald aboard, the same rider who guided the three‑year‑old to a maiden victory at Hawkesbury. Bridge praised the horse’s development, noting his suitability for 2000 m middle‑distance races and his recent improvement after a slow start. He also mentioned fellow Rosehill runner Aye Aye Captain, hoping the dry track will suit her better.

The race also features Chris Waller‑trained Enviable, a Frankel filly returning from a knee injury.
