Trakai prepares for Vytautas the Great 600th anniversary commemorations

Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius and Culture Minister Lukas Alsys visited Trakai to discuss preparations for the 600th anniversary of the death of Grand Duke Vytautas the Great in 2030.

The visit focused on initiatives to commemorate the historical figure and preserve the heritage of Old Trakai, his birthplace. A key project involves the construction of a monument to Vytautas the Great on Karaim Island, which is planned for completion by 2030. The Seimas has designated 2030 as the Year of Vytautas the Great.

Minister Alsys has established a special working group to prepare a comprehensive program for the 2029–2030 commemorations. Officials emphasized that the commemorations serve not only as a historical tribute but also as a way to highlight Lithuania’s statehood and European identity.
