Trans Adriatic Pipeline could transport US LNG via Greece

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) may expand its role in supplying Southeast Europe by transporting American liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Greece, according to U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. Following meetings with TAP Managing Director Luca Schieppati and Greece Country Representative Ioannis Maris, the Ambassador noted that TAP remains vital for diversifying energy supplies in the region.

The potential for increased flexibility is supported by the upcoming operational bidirectionality of the Nea Mesimvria interconnection point. This development will allow the point to function as both an entry and exit point between the TAP system and Greece’s National Natural Gas System (NNGS), operated by DESFA. This change enables gas volumes from various sources, including LNG entering the Greek system, to be transported into the broader European market.

Additionally, Gastrade is assessing interest for a second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Thrace, targeted for 2028. This project aims to increase Greece’s LNG import and export capacity, potentially interconnecting with TAP or the NNGS to strengthen supplies within the Vertical Gas Corridor.
