Trans-Canada Highway crashes kill three between Sicamous and Revelstoke
A series of four vehicle incidents on the Trans-Canada Highway between Sicamous and Revelstoke resulted in three fatalities and at least six injuries over a 68-hour period from August 29 to September 1. The collisions occurred at Three Valley Gap, Back Road near Revelstoke, and Arnold Frontage Road near Sicamous.
The incidents caused more than 15 hours of highway closures, sparking safety concerns regarding the mostly two-lane Highway 1 corridor. Mel Arnold, MP for Kamloops—Shuswap—Central Rockies, noted that the stretch requires ongoing improvements to accommodate rising traffic volumes.
Local businesses and farmers are also facing challenges due to the lack of efficient detours; a detour via the Arrow Lakes can take five hours for a drive that typically lasts 50 minutes. The Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce has previously reported that highway closures significantly impact the food and beverage, retail, and construction sectors through delayed deliveries and lost revenue.
