Transgender Federal Employees Sue Trump Administration Over Health Coverage
On August 3, five federal employees filed a proposed class‑action lawsuit in a Washington federal court challenging a rule issued by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management that, effective January 2026, would bar gender‑affirming care from the Federal Employees Health Benefits and Postal Service Health Benefits programs. The plaintiffs, representing roughly 39,400 transgender federal workers and their families, argue the ban creates substantial barriers to potentially lifesaving treatment and has led some to leave government jobs. They previously filed administrative complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The rule, which could be finalized this month, may also extend to Medicare and Medicaid. The case revives legal battles over whether such exclusions violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
