Trans Pride Limerick protest to return to Bedford Row

The annual Trans Pride Limerick protest is scheduled to take place at Bedford Row in Limerick City on Saturday, August 22, starting at 4 pm. Established in 2024 by Beth Clancy and Jonah Garvey, the event aims to highlight transgender rights, equality, and the specific challenges facing the community.

Organizers identified several critical issues, including the difficulty of accessing healthcare. Spokesperson Beth Clancy noted that Ireland faces significant hurdles regarding hormone replacement therapy (HRT), citing long waiting lists and the requirement to travel to Dublin for specialist appointments. Clancy also expressed concern regarding rising hate crime statistics and the need for specific legislation to protect transgender victims of hate crimes.

The protest will be followed by a Trans Talent Showcase at The Commercial’s Record Room at 6:10 pm, featuring local artists and poets from Limerick, Belfast, Cork, and Dublin. The event is community-funded, with proceeds from a local stall intended to support the Trans Pride Fund for future initiatives.
