Trans rights protesters disrupt Harry Potter gala in London

Trans rights activists disrupted a gala performance of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at London’s Palace Theatre on Thursday night. The protesters, wearing masks and hats to hide their identities, rushed the red carpet and lay down to block the path of arriving guests.

One individual wore a T-shirt reading ‘Rowling money kills,’ a slogan targeting author J. K. Rowling. The protest was aimed at Rowling’s public stances on gender identity, specifically her views that biological sex is real and immutable. While she has described self-declared gender identity as ‘quasi-religious’ and ‘anti-science,’ Rowling has denied being transphobic and stated she respects the rights of trans individuals to live authentically.

The disruption occurred as various British television personalities, including Vanessa Feltz and Angellica Bell, were arriving for the premiere of a new, reimagined single-part version of the stage production. Security personnel intervened and removed the activists within minutes.
