Trans-Sahara Highway: Ebonyi section reaches 45% completion

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has announced that Section 1 of the Trans-Sahara Highway in Ebonyi State has reached 45% completion. This section spans approximately 125.5 kilometres, covering areas including Ndibe Beach, Akpoha, Abomege, Amudo, and Onueke.

The project currently employs over 2,000 workers. Umahi noted that certain portions of the alignment are being dualised to accommodate increasing urban development and economic activity. The highway is intended to enhance security and connectivity in the South-East, with plans to incorporate CCTV cameras and solar-powered lighting.

Section 2 of the highway, which extends into Benue State, covers roughly 173.6 kilometres and has a contract value of approximately N683 billion. The Federal Government has already disbursed 30% of the contract sum.

Local residents in the Ebonyi-Benue border communities have expressed support for the project, citing improved access to medical care, education, and markets for agricultural produce. Residents indicated that the infrastructure development would serve as a significant socio-economic lifeline for the region.
