Transcend Packaging secures global deal to scale plastic‑free coffee cups

Transcend Packaging, a Welsh manufacturer based in Ystrad Mynach, has signed an agreement with U.S. materials‑science firm Footprint to expand production of its recyclable, mineral‑coated “Rubicon” coffee cup platform. The partnership gives Footprint ownership of the Rubicon intellectual property, allowing the company to manufacture the plastic‑free cups at its global sites, beginning with a new plant in Poland and later in North America. Transcend will continue producing the cups at its Welsh factory for customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The deal responds to tightening environmental regulations in Europe and the United States that are pushing food‑service chains away from traditional plastic‑lined paper cups.

Joe Reed, chief revenue officer of Transcend, said the collaboration provides the reach needed to achieve genuine global scale while keeping production in Wales for the UK and Irish markets.
