Transelectrica launches digital substation pilot in Alba Iulia

Transelectrica has launched a pilot project to rehabilitate the Alba Iulia 220/110/20 kV substation, transforming it into the country’s first digital substation. The project is part of the company’s DigiTEL digitalization program, aimed at creating a more secure, resilient, and intelligent electricity transmission network.

The design and execution contract is valued at approximately 90.44 million euros (476.07 million RON) excluding VAT. A significant portion of this, 228.47 million RON, is provided through non-refundable funding from the Modernisation Fund. The project is being implemented by a consortium consisting of Vodafone Romania and Electromontaj SA.

The digital ecosystem will integrate advanced technologies including a private cloud, Digital Twin, augmented reality, geospatial information systems (GIS), and satellite data. It will also feature an Asset Health Center for monitoring technical conditions, integrated cybersecurity, photovoltaic generation, and e-mobility solutions. The implementation is scheduled to last 44 months, with a target completion date of May 2030.
